Home To Nowhere

Microfiction: Part I: Meet Kelsey

AI Generated Image of a Black Teenage girl with blue eyes, wearing a blue shirt, with curly, long brown hair. Created with Canva.

She bounces off the school bus, hair flying in the wind, legs shuffling up dirt behind her swirly body.

Kelsey is a 14-year-old athletic ball of energy who recently discovered she is adopted.

Her mother tried to tell her subtly for years, but Kelsey has always been enamored by fanfare and elaborate explanations. She searched for answers and found them.

As she skips down Tulane Dr., the sky smiles at her, the sun whistles, and cars honk their incessantly abusive horns.

She is heading home to nowhere, where no one is family.

I hope the new year has been kind to each of you so far. Prayerfully, we will all make it through this year with beautiful stories to tell and many memories to store for safekeeping. I am sure we will need all the happiness we can get as time hurries on and 2025 turns into 2026 and beyond. Peace and blessings.

Aunt Laura’s Seafood Macaroni-n-Cheese

Microfiction

The house drowned in the scents of shrimp, crab meat, creamy cheeses, and love.

Aunt Laura’s seafood macaroni-n-cheese is what we lived for every Thanksgiving. My cousins, Philip, Dominique, Sydney, and I attempted to sneak nibbles as soon as it floated away from the oven by our auntie’s aged, yet caring hands.

“Get outta that kitchen, y’all! I ain’t playin’!”

That’s our Nana. She means business–we don’t want her wrath. But we want that cheesy and seafood goodness ASAP, so we try again.

“IF I HAVE TO GET UP FROM THIS CHAIR, Y’ALL ARE GOING TO BE SORRY! WHAT DID I SAY?!”

Mission unaccomplished.

I woke up with the main character chiming in this morning, and I simply had to write this piece of microfiction. For those of you who celebrate, may this Thanksgiving holiday be a joyful, peaceful, loving, and blessed one for you and yours.

For You, My Love, On Your Birthday

Chrissy & I during one of my birthday weekends (maybe my 37th birthday?) in Orlando, Florida. Photo Credit: My cousin, Phil, her husband.

Two full years now
And I’m still trying
But it has gotten better
Without you

It’s not my best
But I do give it my all
Effort isn’t wasted
Without you

It’s colder now
I could use one of your hugs
October isn’t as scary
Without you

This morning, I whispered
To the air around me a
Happy Birthday song that sounded flat
Without you

But I wanted you to know
I’ll never forget, we’ll never forget
The perfect thing we had in life
Without you

Happy Birthday, Chrissy. I still miss you. I always will. But it hurts just a little (major emphasis on little) less without you. 🙏🏾💙
