The Last Poem (Revised)

“this is the last poem
I will write for you.”
and as the words leave my mouth
I know I am lying, that
when it comes to you, truth
is hard.

I tell myself one thing
I do another.
I could have been a painter,
spreading the colors of you
onto the fibers of the canvas
while you blend in perfectly.

Every flaw you point out
as insufferable and odd have
become my favorites:
your hair, your nose, and the
way your bottom lip quivers
when you try to explain something
difficult.

I see no wrong in you.
I believe this is why
we will not make it,
why we could not,
and I believe you hate me
for being blind to your
view of you.

I say again, “this is the last poem
I will write for you”
and you smile, tilt your face
to the sky, and pull my hand
to your heart.
You purse your lips together
and utter a revelation,
“that’s a lie and you know it.”

And you’re right.

everyday fears

I am not of
importance to her–I know this–I
I feel this.
I’m just a blip on an endless
radar of exploration.
I am not a priority.
I am not a priority.

eventually, I’ll have to
find the courage to pursue
someone–anyone who
knows my worth–who appreciates
my existence.

I deserve it.
don’t we all?

Not Okay

The indomitable Sarah Doughty, beautiful people. Truth is spoken here–such truth.

“Here’s the thing:
Nothing about this is okay.
You are not okay.”

Here’s the thing you don’t seem to understand. You aren’t funny. Intolerance, bigotry, and misogyny is no laughing matter. It is not okay to turn someone’s fears into a joke. It is not okay to mock someone. It is not okay taunt a victim. To make excuses for what happened to them. To make light of what they needed to do to survive.

Have you not noticed the trail of burned bridges you’ve left behind you? Have you not noticed the people you have offended? How about the fact that they are women, or men that appreciate women for who they are? Their strength. Their resilience.

No. It is not okay. You are not okay. Get some fucking perspective and some humility while you’re at it.

the light that will never fade

For Chrissy

we shared the same blood
connected by decades’ love
your beauty still lives

you had a great light
shining throughout your body
who will carry it

it will never fade
as long as we speak your name
you will always be

In Waves

For Chrissy

moments with you sashaying
through my thoughts — they come
in waves.

you — a golden-hearted soul
given to us for the time allowed,
still smile as brightly as
you did here on Earth — in my heart.

I feel you.
I know you’re here.
and this acknowledgment of comfort
pushes me through another day.

I hope you see me trying to
hold up your light — trying to
give these gifts I have
while I still can.

one day, I will not write
about you but that will not
mean, I have forgotten you.

neighbors II

my next door neighbors
moved on from this place–rent’s
too high, and they’re too young to
keep struggling without a
sense of purpose.

both of them chose to
move back home for a few months,
maybe a year, maybe more.
I’m going to miss seeing
their smiling faces, watching
them mature even more
as the years gather themselves
one after the other.

who will I be saddled with
next door now?
will they be compassionate?
will they be respectful?
will they be okay with dogs?

so many questions, and the
cleaning crew hasn’t even
started preparing the unit
for walkthroughs.

settle down, brain.
settle down.
