My Sunday Morning Smiles

Left: Caison Michael holding his basketball trophy proudly with a semi-toothless smile. Right: Jernee Timid resting on my cousin’s floor

I woke up with his
face tattooed on my brain;
such a handsome boy with
a smile to shake the world.
He gives me hope.
He lends me peace.
His innocence is contagious.

My old girl rests her
tired body on my cousin’s
carpeted hardwoods; a full
morning of racing through
time has drained her.
She calms my nerves.
She centers my spirit.
She saves me from myself.

And as Sunday kicks off
with temperatures that have
tanked overnight, I wonder
what the constant change of
weather will do to my
head and heart today, but
I’m still smiling because
of a growing boy and an
aging dog.

I love this poem–it reminds me of the days when I could run circles around the boys in my neighborhood–how we all avoided going home because no one was at home and nothing was at home but pain.

It may speak to you, too. Visit the author’s site to read the poem in its entirety and to like it/show love, too.

From my eighth-floor windowI could hear hope bounce back and forthon concrete loitered with crack vials. Dirt-caked Nikes were like handsreaching for revolutionin the air. It didn’t get them out of the projects, but Jordan would have been proudthe way these boys balled. It kept their bodies distracted from the hungerof not eating for three days. Here, […]

Shine

Pictured Affirmation. Created by Tremaine L. Loadholt

We don’t want to think about it, but the truth of the matter is, there are some people amongst us who do not want OUR success or GREAT things to take off.

They secretly wish to and actually may act to dim your light.

Please do not allow them to do this. Go on and shine anyway.

Golden Buzzer: Chapel Hart Wows The Judges With …

Chapel Hart

I am not a fan of America’s Got Talent. I do not watch the show, but I have a very close friend who shares videos of performances with me she believes I’ll love. She is ALWAYS RIGHT.

This performance led me to view the video not just once, but multiple times. The pure joy that shot through my body while watching these beautiful young ladies give their gift to the hosts and to the crowd is unmatched and cannot be described.

This is definitely a Black Joy moment. And my heart is so full right now and happy.

*Black Joy is …
Black Joy possesses a range that is boundless and is not easily defined.

The most accurate definition is:

Black Joy is anything that inspires, supports, and uplifts Black culture.

6.30.22, a memorable day
for decades to come
as history was fine-tuned
when it added you

can justice be revived
will we see it have
lasting breaths breathed
into it

representation still needs
our focus, but it feels
right to watch you
don the robes of
the highest court in
our system

it feels right to
witness a woman
of your stature finally
receive her flowers while
she’s still living

it is “right as rain”
and cleansing waters
rush over me–elation
is an understatement
