Your Version of Love

Part III An Audio Poem

You give love a headstart
telling it to run as fast as it
can before you catch it,
subdue it, chain it, and hold
it prisoner, doomed to a life
of serving only you.

You let it out to breathe in
two seconds of fresh air,
claiming the sun does not
have time for an extra pair of eyes
looking over its shoulders.
You label love a safe place
yet you castaway demons
in the pits of its lap,
shoving your world into
the spotlight.

Love has its eyes on you,
watching your every move
as you calculate an escape from
the escape that got you here
in the first place.

Love does not come to your aid,
does not fix you hearty meals
made from scratch, cannot remember
the day it looked at you and wanted
to take you right where you stand,
strip you down to bare bones,
kiss the aching places,
and soothe the locking joints in
dire need of oil and hot baths.

You send love out on
a coffee run, tell it to bring
you decaf with double cream, six sugars,
and a shot of espresso, but
demand your change and
refuse to tip.
but, you want love to see you
in full bloom, waiting for it,
heart heavy, mind full of worry,
and a soul tired of needing the
one thing it cannot get.

Tender  An Audio Poem

I don’t know
more than words can say
of me.
I am simple.
I do not require much.

You disappear in the shadows
hiding from my eyes,
afraid of my smile.
I am trying to change,
trying to fit your mold.
But, I keep breaking.

It must be frustrating for an
artist to lose hold
of her masterpiece before
it can greet the world.
In a box, you keep my
fragrances stacked as memories
of better days
and I only seep out
when it’s safe to wander at night.

Cozy, cocooned, and carefully
placed at the crook
of your spine, my tongue
finds gold.
I strike it rich in you.
You, a well bursting
in my hands, the comfort
of your embrace after lingers
for hours.

You bite down on
a testament that no one
needs to hear, swallowing
confessions too broad in
description.
The tender pull of
my love lifts
you from your pedestal
of glory.

I am your rock of ages
crushing every wall
meant to keep me out.

Forevermore

I am broken without you
shards of glass shifting down the tracks–
you cover me with your warmth,
breaths that I inhale, savoring each one.

I see you in glimpses of light,
waving on the windowsill,
I crave your touch.
It is a blessing to watch you sleep,
smile at you when you wake–
a gift unwrapped with caution.

You are still fragile with me.
Every curve of your body
settles into my embrace,
I will not break you.
I say this as I feel the beats of
your heart sync in time with mine.

You are safe in my care.

Forever is not enough time
with you.
I want ten thousand forevers
and twenty more after.

And even then,
That wouldn’t be enough.
