#2: Deer Alert (Deer Season)

Deer Season
Dear Deer Season, we normally
don’t meet on these terms, but
I’ve seen many does and not
that many bucks, and I am
wondering, will there be
any mating this year?
I know you’d much rather keep
it all a secret and surprise me
on my walks with new additions,
struggling to keep up with
the bevy, but I need to know
which corners to avoid
because Daddy Deer isn’t as
friendly.
I haven’t planned on using
running mode with these
knees, but if I need to
kick up my gears, I’ll
gladly do so if a male is
spotted and is in search of
heat that I can’t produce.
“Death by Deer” isn’t a
phrase I envisioned on
my tombstone.
Have you gotten your copy of my new book: a collection of serial tales & flash fiction, Séduire (E-Book and Paperback) yet?
I recently signed up to write on Substack as well. Poking the Bear’s Belly for Fun is a place of healing as I speak about the most recent events with my place of employment, as it pertains to racism and discrimination. I welcome your visit.

🦌 Your enDEARing poem complements this image trE! A couple of days ago I saw about 3 of them near the houses behind us in broad day light! They have no where to go with all of this development occurring in our area. UGH! 😖

Exactly! All of the trees are being cut down and their little cozy spots in the woods are no longer the same. Soon, they’ll have nowhere to go, and they’re going to be all up and through shopping center parking lots and it’ll be no one’s fault but our own. People are always messing up stuff.

My daughter, son-in-law, and two-year-old granddaughter survived “Death by Deer” on July 13th. The deer… and her car didn’t.

Thank God they’re still alive. I hate it about the deer, though. They jump out and into the road, scattering away from something or running to something. We’ve taken so much of their habitat from them, half of them are so lost and confused.
I pray for continued peace, healing, and strength for your daughter, SIL, and grandbaby. 🙏🏾🩵

Lol. Love it. My knees aren’t built for that either!
Would you believe that “Death by Deer (or Moose)” is oddly a very specific personal fear of mine?

I’ve seen a deer react in a way by defending its young that I never want to witness again. And one of my very good friends’ ex-husband’s wife was attacked by a moose and will have a limp for the rest of her life. She was blessed to not have died!
I’d say it’s a valid fear.

That is terrifying. I am sorry to hear about your friend’s ex’s wife. When I moved to the countryside, it quickly became something that lived ever-present in my mind.

There’s not a deer hunting season in Australia.

Do you all even have deer there?

They were brought in and are now a huge problem. Culling will take place, but not through a deer-hunting season.

🙏🏾🩵 They mate like crazy. I’m sure you know that, though, from being in the States before. They’re such majestic creatures. I love seeing them.

We have all sorts of deer wandering through our backyard — we live three blocks from a densely wooded county park. Deb’s current favorites are a doe and her two fawns. The young ones love our hosta leaves (and flowers, alas); go ahead, you two, we’ll grow more. Doesn’t matter if Deb & I are in our back porch, they come right up to the windows and start chomping. Mama keeps an eye on them, of course, but even she has decided that the Herlockers are harmless.
And every so often the girls get the zoomies and go tearing through yards chasing each other — that makes *me* nervous! “Watch the rocks, honey! No no, go left, GO LEFT! Or jump, you can jump, never mind me, you’re fine…”

😂😆🤣 Yeah, I live in yet another woodsy area, kind of hard to escape here in this part of NC.
I know you two get all sorts of entertainment from nature in that porch of yours.

Perhaps more Bucks find themselves being hunted.

It’s not hunting season yet here, and people can’t hunt in neighborhoods for deer.
There are new little ones around, so gotta be a buck or two somewhere close by. But I get what you’re saying.

Yeah i didn’t know per se, i meant in general.

Understood. I can see that, especially for the antlers and extra meat and fat a buck provides.

“Death By Deer” I can imagine worse on a gravestone 🥰

True, but I don’t want it on mine. 😂😆🤣

Deer is one of my oldest spirit guides. It would feel like a circle closing 🥰
