Left-handed in a Dream: A Haibun

Part IV: Coming back to her senses|NaPoWriMo #14

AI-Generated Image: A Black woman is sitting on her bed in deep thought. She is wearing a dark teal top with an overly expressive look on her face. The sheets are beige or off-white and the headboard is a dark tan color.

They sojourned in Panama five years ago. The short vacation was a breath of fresh air for the two of them. She recalled the love-making that shifted their spirits every day while they were there. In those moments, she knew he was her person. She and Rodney were meant to be. How could she get that feeling back again? Memory sat with the quietness of the room while Rodney played the instrumental version of “Your Love Is Kingon their Yamaha C3X Grand Piano. The way the melody echoed throughout their home brought a smile to her face. And there it was . . . the moment she needed to jog her memory. She was falling in love again–it only took a melody pouring from the tips of Rodney’s fingers to do it.

  • And I miss playing the keyboard… to listening to it being played. My neighbor or gives music lessons. When he isn’t teaching, he be jamming on his bass. It’s annoying when I’m ready for bed, but during the day when I’m home…beautiful

  • Your love is King is such an appropriate tune for this episode. πŸ™Œ
Memory isn’t sitting on the fence. I sense that she’s a woman of virtue. The “wobble” is normal in all relationships.
    Loving the series, Tre.

  • Because I am saddled with Old Man Brain, I had to go back and reread the previous parts so this is my overall thoughts on everything so far:

I’m fascinated by how you’ve structured this pieceβ€”the interplay between prose and haiku creates a dreamlike quality that perfectly mirrors Memory’s state of mind. The symbolism of being left-handed in her dream seems to represent her yearning for a different path, while the piano music at the end grounds her back in the reality of her choice. The character’s name itself is so meaningful tooβ€”Memoryβ€”constantly looking back while trying to move forward. Beautiful work that captures the complexity of long-term commitment.

Keep up the excellent work, trE.
