Microfiction: Kelsey approaches Kimya about her suspicions

Kimya is home from work. Her body is worn and she looks like lost hope and misplaced grief. Kelsey stands at the kitchen’s entrance waiting for her mother.
She is breathing heavily. The room is closing in on her. The sun moves in and centers itself on their kitchen windows. Kelsey’s breathing picks up slightly. She inhales, then exhales, then slams her mother with the question.
“Mom! You look tired. Work must’ve been insane! Come, sit down.” She casually pulls out a chair. Kimya flops her flailing body onto the chair’s surface.
“Thank you, Kels. What’s up? Something on your mind?”
Kelsey shifts on her heels, bounces back and forth, and hurriedly throws the question into the air, “Am I adopted?”
Kimya gulps. Her eyes widen. She cuffs her weakened hands onto her face and puffs air into them.
“I knew this day was coming. Yes, Kels. Yes, you’re adopted.”
Exactly 👍🏽 and you’re so welcome!!!! ❤️

The worst is when you’re given up and age out in foster care. But it all seems awful when you see others with parents who birthed them…yeah, that’s sad.

This reminds me of what white Australian friends were asked when they adopted a Korean baby. The judge said, ‘Sorry, but I have to ask this question. Do you plan on telling her she is adopted?’ Everybody laughed.

She handled the question really well. A direct question deserves a direct answer. I am glad the story is addressing this topic. So many families experience this… or are dreading having the conversation at some point.
Looking forward to the next episode, Tre.

Love this story trE. Adoption is in my family, my nephew was adopted by his two dads in 2004. Of course with the course of the “new world order” his life might be turned upside down with parents not recognized as a core family. I am just grateful he recently turned 21.

Your nephew knows who his parents are. And that’s what’s most important.
Adoption is in mine as well.
I am glad the story is one with which you can connect. Thanks, Matt. 🙏🏾🩵

Well, his adopted parents at least. Its an open adoption but not once did his birth Mom ever try to find him. His birth Mom is white and his unknown father is either black or hispanic, the birth Mom has no clue who the father is.
