A one-line poem
Managers within my department know my work ethic–they can count on me–I have what they’re looking for; overachiever, can’t turn it off, even if I wanted to.
Author’s Note: This is a burden at times. I’ve gotten better about setting boundaries on what I will and will not do as requests completely out of my job description, but when folks know you can do something and do it well and are responsible too . . . Well, many tend to use you for what you can do.
I can definitely relate to this!

I enjoy working hard and I love playing hard. It is a tetter-totter of never exactly in balance. But isn’t that life?

That is most definitely life at times, Ali. Yes, ma’am.

Haha. Lol @”Boss Lady”. So yesterday, my supervisor reached out to my Work Force Management Team via my personal Teams Chat group to see if she could talk to me for a while and one of the managers said, “You sure can, but don’t say that too loud because anytime she’s not inbound, the queue goes insane without her.” So my supervisor said, “I’ll whisper it next time.” We have a running joke that anytime I take a break or lunch from inbound calls, the queue fills up. I answer a ton of radiology calls each day. I’m quick, I’m efficient, I’m knowledgeable about our services, and I help others throughout the day. Every time I sign off for lunch or a break, I come back to the queue and it’s insane, and there are tons more schedulers. I love my job, though. So, that helps. But nope, can’t turn it off. Lol. Thanks again, Bella.

many tend to use you for what you can do – Truth. It has been a difficult curve for me to set boundaries, I am so much better though.

Same. So, I had to learn how and when to say no 😉

Exactly. It has taken some time, but over the years, I’ve learned if you don’t set boundaries, and let folks know what you will and won’t do, they will walk all over you.

I did know a wonderful overachiever at work. I could not understand his commitment and felt guilty going home on time. When he retired, it took two people to replace him. I guess his reward was that everyone loved him. He broke down in tears at his retirement party and could not respond to all the accolades.

I wasn’t suggesting you do that exercise publicly, just in your own mind. What made me think of that (a long time ago) was when I used to repair clocks and watches as a hobby. People would offer to pay me £5 when I had spent ten hours dismantling, cleaning, repairing, and reassembling their watch! No concept of the value of time! I had never heard of the “At Will” law and now, having read up on it, can only be horrified at the injustice of such a long held practice.

Thank you, Peter. Ah, this does sound like a good idea to do in my mind.
And yes, “At Will States” shouldn’t even be a thing in my opinion, but you know . . . it’ll never change, probably not in my lifetime.
Thank you again!

An interesting exercise is to try to put a value on your hourly rate that you SHOULD charge for any work you do. Then compare it with professional fees and try to explain the difference!

Okay, Peter. Yeah . . . I’m in the States, and in an At Will State, at that. We have to be careful about such things because you can be fired on the spot. *Shrugs*

Yes, it can be a burden.

It can be . . . Stayed over thirty minutes last night to help one of our managers. There are about four of them, I don’t mind helping, but the others, nah. Some folks know your worth, others just take advantage.
