For: Toni Morrison
I don’t think there’s a word
for what I’m feeling.
when you write and you’re black
and a woman and you lose
another beam of light that
gave you hope and taught you through
words how to bust out of
your skin:
no excuses, no looking back, no pulling
away from your core
you fade . . .
bits of you break off,
float into the air,
and paint the sky with sadness.
I want to be able to
say how moved, enriched, and
motivated I was as someone who
followed her words.
I don’t know how to do that
knowing that death still comes
even when you feel you
have so much more to learn.
you have so much more to witness.
but the day ends after twenty-four hours
and a new one begins.
that’s the constant of life.
I will remember bluest eyes,
beloved memories, Sula’s hips,
passion-filled dreams, a home
away from home, and how to
love.
I will remember
the gifts laid before me,
one million times ten — words
that blend in with my skin
and kiss the world.
I will remember
why I picked up
a pen.

It seems to me that the key word about her writing is “courage.” She wrote with power and striking originality, yes, but especially with courage — courage she has passed on to others.

A beautiful tribute Tre, I cried when I heard the news yesterday. God gave us a gift in her words and soul, that can never fade away, keeping her in my heart and words will teach and hopefully, someday heal.

I cried as well. I am still very sad. 💙 But, I am grateful that I knew of/ know of her work. It has really strengthened me. I have no doubt that it always will.

Toni Morrison’s death is crushing. She was a true national treasure and a gifted storyteller. My bookcase is filled with her works. I started with Song of Solomon back in 1977.

Omg, trE. I did not know she passed. As a white woman, she was almost too dark for me. Almost. Not quite. I crave to know others experience, so I read on. It was many years ago but still I remember how it left me, enriched me in a way no one else’s could. The world needed, needs her words. Thank God they remain for us all.

She passed on yesterday. 88 years old. My heart . . . I am glad she had such an amazing mind. She’s one of the reasons why I write. Peace, Debbie.
